Monastic Conservation: Ancient Practices from the Limi Valley of Nepal
Three thousand-year-old institutions, indigenous peoples, and the national government can be collaborative players in the successful management and governance of Nepal’s natural protected areas, according to the findings of Manoj Gautam’s qualitative research in the remote Limi Valley of Nepal in 2017.
This research, which evolved into Manoj’s dissertation for a Master of Science in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management at the University of Oxford in the UK, takes into consideration the challenges faced by the population as ancient traditional resource management practices intersect with rapidly changing sociopolitical realities.

Sustainable Conservation Through Human Behavior Change
One of Manoj Gautam’s greatest contributions to animal welfare and wildlife conservation is his work in innovating, field-testing, and communicating the concept of Human Behavior Change (HBC) to communities and activists in Nepal and at global venues. This book outlines the history of this movement and suggests methods applicable to a diverse range of countries and habitats.
In 2017, Manoj organized the largest-ever gathering on HBC at the international Asia For Animals Conference. The conference addressed the most urgent issues in the field of conservation and animal welfare.
Through his years of work on conservation issues, Manoj has found that these types of community-originated approaches are the most effective way to achieve sustainable human behavior change that benefits the entire ecosystem.

Planet in Peril: My Journey to Take Back the Future
This book tells the remarkable personal story of a visionary environmental activist and scholar, Manoj Gautam
On his first trip to the United States in 2008, Manoj was an articulate 25-year-old conservationist on his way to speak at the conference of Dr. Jane Goodall’s international Roots & Shoots youth conservation organization. On that trip, he captivated everyone he met with his story of meeting “Dr. Jane” after sending her his very first email at the age of 15. Time and again on that trip, he impressed audiences by his attachment to his beloved Nepal and his passion and clear vision for improving the welfare of animals and wildlife habitats.
And Manoj has accomplished a great deal since then. He is the currently the Executive Director of the Jane Goodall Institute of Nepal, where he works on issues of sustainability, youth involvement, and human-wildlife interaction and co-existence. Manoj is currently building out an organization for high-level conservation research and related travel called Planet Peregrine, and in 2018 he completed a Masters degree in conservation at Oxford University in the UK.

Manu Mitra: People-Powered Urban Dog Management in Kathmandu
This book chronicles the successful ward-by-ward, community-based no-kill dog management program in Kathmandu, Nepal. The brainchild of Manoj Gautam and animal welfare activist Sarah Vallentine, the program revolves around volunteer community wardens who receive citizen reports of sick or aggressive dogs and bring them in to the Manu Mitra clinic for spay/neuter and vaccination.
Focused on improving the health of neighborhood dogs, this program has improved the health and quality of life for residents and dogs alike. The program is fully implemented in 32 of the 35 wards in the city, where previously up to 72,000 dogs were euthanized in an average year.
“The humane treatment of these dogs and the resulting improvement in the quality of human and animal life in the neighborhoods is tremendously satisfying,” says Manoj.
